Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free - John 8:32

Genesis 2 goes from a large view of the whole world created and focuses on a smaller stage called the Garden of Eden. It is different from Genesis 1 in content and style, but it is still historical rather than parable or myth. This is a basis for understanding who we were meant to be in relation to God, each other, and nature.

We will flip back and forth a little

Read Genesis 1:26-29 and 2:4-25

What beliefs about man’s origin have you heard that contradict Genesis 1:27; 2:7?

What beliefs about man’s nature and purpose have you heard that contradict Genesis?

How is man like animals? (see 1:22,28,29-30; 2:7,19)

Fruitful and multiply

give you seed bearing plant for food

formed from dust/ground

How is man unlike animals? (see 1:24,26,28; 2:19,20)

according to their kind

mankind in our image

rule over the earth

animals to be named

Adam to name animals

1. Genesis asserts that man came into being by a decision and act of God (see 1:26; 2:7).

What can we learn from the following passages about man’s original nature and character? 1:26-27 – “Decision” not chance, likeness, rule (peta, not equal)

2:7 – breath of life (lookup 2 Tim 3:16 scripture is God breathed – same breath that brings man to life brings scripture to life as we read)

2:25 – naked, no shame

What does it mean to be made in the image of God?

What does being made in God’s image imply for the way you approach your life?
