Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free - John 8:32

2. What do these passages tell you about humanity’s intended purpose and task?

1:26,28 – in our image “to be like us”

2:15 – placed in garden to watch over it

2:19-20 – name them {Name (2:19). In the ancient world, the right to name something or someone indicated rule or ownership. God named day, night, seas, and so on

(See also 2:23 Adam named woman;

4:25 – Eve named Seth;

17:5 – God changed to Abraham)

3. In what senses is man made in God’s image (see 1:27)? (How do man’s abilities and function on earth reflect God’s image?)

Look up:

Colossians 3:10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

1 John 3: 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Sin has blurred but not erased the image of God in us.

4. God made the female human in some ways like and in some ways unlike the male. What does 1:26-27 tell you about what woman is and how she is related to man?

5. What does 2:21-23 tell you about woman’s nature and relationship to man? (What is the significance of woman having been made from a part of man?)

HELPER (2:18,20). Scripture often uses this word for God (see Hosea 13:9; Psalm 115:9-11) and occasionally for military allies, so “helper” does not imply inferiority in itself.] The sense is more of a needed ally than a servant girl. This helper is God’s last, greatest gift to man.

Hosea 13:9 “You are destroyed, Israel, because you are against me, against your helper.

Psalm 115:9 All you Israelites, trust in the LORD—he is their help and shield. 10 House of Aaron, trust in the LORD—he is their help and shield. 11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD—he is their help and shield.

6. What can we learn about God from the way He provided for man a garden, a mighty river, many trees for food, and a suitable helper in his work (see 2:8-24)?

According to Genesis 1–2, does a person’s worth come from what he does, or from something else? How might this fact affect the way you treat yourself and others?

Read this verbatim. As a human being, a believer represents humanity. The creation of humanity was set apart as the Apex of all of God‘s creation. No other creation of God can tell the glory of God like a human being because no other creation bears the image of God. The heavens, mountains, and oceans are proclaiming the glory of God, but not like we can display it. Every single person we see and encounter is, by nature, showing us something of God himself.

As believers, we carry the greatest light of God‘s general revelation, but we also bear the light of God special revelation. God has commanded to shine in your heart the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
