Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free - John 8:32

What is Scripture Good For? Pt 1

Name some purposes for scripture.

As I was preparing for this, I was really moved. These verses are just amazing.

We are going to concentrate on this verse tonight, but we will set it up first.

16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

I have heard this verse hundreds, if not, thousands of times since I have become a Christian. I refer to this verse a lot when I am talking in men’s group. But, I could not have told you where the verse was in context. Who said it, or to whom.

Before we start, does anybody know who said this and who they said it to?

Read:

2 Timothy 3:14-17 – NIV

14. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15. and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17. so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Who wrote the book of Timothy?

Paul

Who is Timothy?

Timothy is the recipient of, not the author of the two books in the Bible named first and second Timothy. His father was Greek, and his mother was Jewish. He was taken on by Paul as one of his “disciples.“ Paul poured into Timothy and taught him Christian living. When he was only in his late teens, possibly early 20s, he joined Paul on a missionary trip. But before this time, he was already distinguished as faithful and he was noticed by the elders around him. He probably heard and responded to the gospel when Paul came through the area, on his first missionary journey, but we don’t know for sure. Later Timothy served as Paul’s representative to a few churches, including the church at Corinth and Philippi. He was a pastor in Ephesus. Timothy is also mentioned as being with Paul when Paul wrote second Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, first and second, Thessalonians, and Philemon.

This is not a study on Timothy, I just wanted to give you a little background. Maybe the verses we will study will make sense knowing this context.

This will be really tough tonight to get thru because as I was preparing this, I thought, “every one of these verses could be a study of their own.”

Here we go… 16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching

Verses about teaching:

2 Timothy 4:1-4 – NIV

1. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2. Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Galatians 6:6 – NIV

6. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.

Colossians 3:16 – NIV

16. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 – NIV

4. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

…and one of my favs…

Matthew 28:19-20 – NIV

19. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20. and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for …rebuking

Verses about rebuking:

What does rebuking mean?

expressing sharp disapproval or criticism.

1 Timothy 5:20 – esv

As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.

Galatians 6:1 – NIV

1. Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

James 5:20 – NIV

20. remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

Luke 17:3-4 – NIV

3. So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Matthew 18:15-17 – NIV

15. “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17. If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
